Is it safe to do my own car battery maintenance?

Basic battery maintenance, like cleaning corrosion and tightening clamps, is manageable if you’re comfortable under the hood. Look for white or green chalky buildup on the posts and terminals and scrub it away with a soft-bristle brush. Check that the fasteners are secure, then apply dielectric gel to the posts and terminals to help prevent future corrosion. Battery replacement is a different story—it can be complex, even for professionals, and an improper install can damage your vehicle, so leave that job to Lambs Tire & Automotive.

How long will my car battery replacement take?

Most car battery replacements take just 20 to 30 minutes with a qualified auto mechanic. That time can include resetting your vehicle’s onboard computer and registering the new battery.

What are the signs my car battery needs replacing?

Needing a jump-start or hearing a slow crank are clear signs your battery is on its way out. Watch for subtler clues, too, like headlights that dim at idle, a startup that sounds unfamiliar, or glitchy door locks and windows. Catching these early is far easier than dealing with a dead battery, so schedule your free battery check today.

What helps a car battery last longer?

Keeping your battery charged is the most important step, whether through regular driving or a trickle charger. Limit frequent short trips, since the repeated start, stop, start cycle strains the battery without giving the alternator time to recharge it. Make sure lights are off and accessories are unplugged when the vehicle is parked, and keep the terminals clean. A knowledgeable technician can also check your voltage, tighten fasteners, clean the battery, and apply anti-corrosion dielectric gel.

How do you test a car battery?

Our certified technicians use top-of-the-line testers called conductance testers that test the voltage and amperage as well as the internal resistance of the battery, which identifies how well your battery can conduct electricity. Each test compares the cold cranking amp ratings to the normal operating range specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Unless you have the tools and knowledge to do so correctly, it’s recommended to bring in your vehicle for a free battery check.
